Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula continues to encourage Taxi operators to register and apply for the Taxi Relied Fund.
Although the Taxi Relief Fund was initially met with hesitancy, Fikile Mbalula notes that the Taxi Relief Fund continues to receive applications from Taxi operators.
The Taxi Relief Fund has been put into place to assist Taxi operators and organisations who were heavily affected and impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
During South Africa’s lockdown Taxis were allowed to only carry 50 percent of their licensed vehicle capacity, this was later increased to 70 percent.
The government has allocated a once-off ex-gratia fund to the value of R1,135-billion for taxi operators across South Africa, of minibus taxis and e-hailing services with valid operating licenses as of March 2020.
Minister Mbalula says operators have until 31 March 2023 to apply for the Taxi Relief Fund.
